Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures are removable prosthetics that replace your permanent teeth and the surrounding tissues. They rest on top of your gums, improve your biting and chewing abilities, and reduce the risk of oral health problems such as gum recession and bone loss.

What are the types of dentures?

At Century Village Dental, the team offers several types of dentures, including:

Partial dentures

The team might recommend partial dentures if you’re only missing a few permanent teeth. A partial denture has a metal frame (similar to a retainer), which attaches to small metal clasps bonded to your healthy teeth.

Full dentures

Full dentures completely replace your upper or lower dental arch. A full denture has a metal base, pink plastic gums, and a complete row of artificial teeth.

Implant-anchored dentures

Implant-anchored dentures are similar to full dentures. The difference is that they attach to dental implants –– small metal posts that your Century Village Dental provider inserts into the empty sockets where your teeth used to be.

What does getting dentures involve?

At Century Village Dental, getting dentures requires multiple appointments over several months.

Your provider reviews your dental records, completes an oral exam, and takes digital X-rays. Then, they make impressions of your teeth and jaw and measure the space between each of your empty tooth sockets.

After sending your impressions to a denture lab, the lab creates models or wax forms in the exact shape of your partial or full dentures. When the model is ready, you return to Century Village Dental and try it on.

Your provider assesses the shape, color, and fit and makes tweaks for the final denture cast. After approving the design, they send the final mold to the denture lab, which creates your custom dentures.

If you choose to get implant-anchored dentures, you undergo an implant-placement procedure first.

Is wearing dentures painful?

Adjusting to dentures takes time. During the first few weeks, it’s normal to experience soreness, increased saliva production, and minor irritation. Your tongue and the muscles that help hold the dentures in position will adjust. If any pain or discomfort persists, call the team at Century Village Dental immediately.
